Drawing from a difficult upbringing spent in an impoverished public housing project in Chicago, with a broken family, Nathaniel Mary Quinn makes large-scale, mixed-media drawings and paintings of collaged and fragmented figures, through which he demonstrates that we are all the sum of our experiences. In his words, “I hope to convey a sense of how our experiences, both good and bad, operate to construct our identities. Paul Kremer, born in 1971 in Chicago, is an American artist whose artwork references everything but performance art. Kremer uses traditional methods, working with acrylics on canvas or paper to achieve his distinctive style of painting. His artistic production oscillates between digitally printed meditations on the internet, and massive color field abstractions. Art in America's Raphael Rubinstein describes Kremer's work as "bold compositions whose hard-edge, single-color shapes (generally red-orange, black, or white) oscillate between flat abstraction and illusionistic geometry, evoking monumental architecture as well as broken-off glacier sections. "Rubinstein also writes: "Kremer's uninflected surfaces and smooth contours mark him as an heir of Ellsworth Kelly." New York-based art historian and curator Alex Bacon has written extensively on Kremer's work and has praised the artist's ability to combine abstraction with everyday familiarity: "Abstracting from familiar forms. . . enables Kremer to harness the sensations that arise from our day-to- day encounters." Kremer's work has also been referred to as "wonderfully freeing" and Kremer's use of overlapping color fields has been likened to "Josef Albers-style color interactions."

Peter Doig is a contemporary Scottish artist, celebrated as one of the most important representational painters working today. His paintings are characterized by their equal focus on both landscapes and figures, melding art historical and personal references into painterly abstractions with distinctive compositions. By forming powerful and affecting snapshots of contemporary existence—such as a childhood ski trip or an orange canoe—Doig’s works are both diaristic and universally relevant. Fiercely eclectic, his practice shares no central formula, and instead functions as part of a whole that provides insight into his personal history and political ethos. “I'm not trying to make paintings look like photos,” he has said of his process. “I want to make paintings using photos as a reference, the way painters did when photography was first invented.” Born on April 17, 1959 in Edinburgh, United Kingdom, his family relocated to Trinidad in 1962 for his father’s job and later to Canada in 1966. Doig moved to London in 1979 where he studied at the Wimbledon School of Art and later received his MA from the Chelsea College of Art and Design in 1990. In 2000, his friend the painter Chris Ofili invited Doig to an artist residency in Trinidad. He has since held several solo exhibitions including “Peter Doig: No Foreign Lands” which opened in 2013 at the Scottish National Gallery in Edinburgh, this was notably the first show of the artist’s work to be held in the country of his birth. In 2007, his painting White Canoe sold at Sotheby's for $11.3 million, which was at the time an auction record for a living European artist. Doig has lived and worked in Trinidad since 2002. In photo-based collage, painting, assemblage, and sculpture, Brenna Youngblood explores the iconography of urban African American experience, issues of identity, ethics, and representation, and the politics of abstraction. Youngblood’s early work—layered photomontages drawn from her everyday life—incorporated images of her family and friends, storefronts, and police cars, and snapshots of domestic objects, such as bare light bulbs, cheap wood veneer, TVs, and aging upholstery. Concerned with the formal qualities of imagery and objects, she integrates found objects and materials into her painterly compositions, and has sometimes examined more political subject matter, such as in www.Alphabetboys.com (2012), a grid of institutional acronyms, from IRS to FEMA. Toby Ziegler arrived at his distinctive process of art-making following his graduation from art school as a way of dealing with the disillusionment he felt about being an artist. Using 3-D modeling software, Ziegler takes found images (Flemish Old Master paintings, John Constable's clouds, 16th-century pornography) and translates them into pixels. Then, he works over Inkjet prints of the results by hand with paint or correction fluid, or, more recently, renders them in oil on canvas or aluminum panels. Ziegler's sculptures likewise begin from flat source images redrawn as 3-D models. In The Alienation of Objects (2010), Ziegler used grainy photos of the Iberian head Pablo Picasso famously stole from the Louvre and chiseled away at to remake the sculpture in a Cubist redo, part two. Ziegler has also turned Victorian England's kitsch Staffordshire pottery dogs into towering geometric forms of cardboard and gesso.

In her darkly humorous, poetic works, Vibha Galhotra confronts the shifting topography of her native India, producing mixed-media sculptures, installations, public projects, videos, and photographs that serve as indictments of urbanization and environmental degradation. As she describes: “Global warming is a real threat and so is terrorism. On the one hand, we are replacing natural landscapes with man-made things and then in a bid to snatch these, we spread terror.” Galhotra’s work lampoons the absurdity of this cycle, with a formal elegance inspired by traditional Indian culture and the large-scale environmental projects of Andy Goldsworthy and Christo & Jean-Claude. She often uses culturally resonant found objects. Untitled (Veil Triptych) (2011), for example, is a wall hanging composed of ghungroos (small, metallic bells worn by classical Indian and Pakistani dancers), showing a construction hook dangling menacingly above a cityscape.
